John Kim was originally born in Seoul, Korea and since then immigrated to the United States when he was 9 years old. Since then he has lived in Virginia then eventually moving to Maryland where he currently resides. John found passion and talent in drawing and painting early on in his life but resisted the pursuit of being an artist. He ended up attending a tech school to purse being a automotive technician but after few years of working dead end jobs he eventually found his way back to pursue his dream of becoming a professional artist. Since then he attended a local community college eventually transferring to MICA to pursue his BFA in painting.

     John has exhibited his work through his school at Montgomery College Rockville campus and Maryland Institute College of Arts. Through Montgomery College he has exhibited his work at the Sarah Silberman Gallery during 2013 and 2014 Annual Student show where he received multiple scholarships. Through Maryland Institute College of Arts he received a transfer scholarship and multiple competitive drawing scholarships.

    John as an artist is constantly evolving and trying to challenge himself as an Artist. He is always exploring the materiality of paint and different ways to approach a painting. He is interested in using the figure as a way to create a narrative. He is currently focusing on using his mother as a way to narrate the life of a single mother while bringing in elements of being a Korean Immigrant.
