Artist Statement (based on current work)

A woman stands alone in her bedroom. The dim yellow light creates long shadows on the wall. Her eyes are downcast and she contemplates her past choices and regrets while holding her cup of coffee. She is my mother.

I am the only child of a single Korean immigrant mother. I have watched her struggle against economic and emotional obstacles throughout my life, her determination to succeed no matter what the cost. She is strong willed, determined, resilient, yet still she is lonely and very much vulnerable. She carries the weight of the world but the weight does not crush her for there is a spiritual presence guiding her, providing strength to carry on.

My paintings translate the intimacy and vulnerability of my personal experience into a classically painted surface. With the use of religious allegories, dramatic chiaroscuro, and compositions to craft narratives that are both personal and universal.
